The Cool Truth About Thermostats
Thermostats can sometimes be tricky to operate, so we would like to take this opportunity to help our Jacksonville customers get a grasp on what they’re all about, what kinds are available and how they can be effectively used. While there are certainly a variety of thermostats on the market, the basics of most small units are essentially the same. Here are a few pointers about thermostats and how to use them most effectively.
A thermostat’s main job is to control the heating/air conditioning system in order to maintain a particular temperature in a given space and make occupants more comfortable. Outside of its basic function of maintaining a specified temperature, however, thermostats can also help to control the heating and cooling operation of an entire heated/cooled space, such as a whole house or an entire office building. Interestingly enough, this one piece of equipment can be a key player in controlling energy usage and cost of operation of your HVAC unit.
How does this work? It’s easy! Turn the thermostat up a few degrees, or even a degree or two on a hot day and you can significantly reduce your cooling costs over time. The same holds true by lowering the temperature on the device on cool days. Just a minor change in temperature settings can have a big effect on heating and cooling costs. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can pre-set temperatures so that they fluctuate when you are out of the house and when you are sleeping to further reduce your energy usage. By using this HVAC accessory wisely, you can still maintain indoor comfort, while not wasting valuable energy to heat or cool a space when no one is in it.
At All Weather Contractors, we have several different thermostats to choose from, but don’t be overwhelmed – the details are simple! All of our models control the basic heating and cooling functions of your HVAC units; however, some have more customizable features, such as controllable fan speed and ventilation. Still others allow you to control your heated/cooled space by way of zones. The level of customizable features that come standard with your thermostat should depend on your level of comfort with the technology, as well as how your system is set up – but try not to sell yourself short! Some of those “bells and whistles” can prove to be features that you don’t want to live without!
For example, most of our thermostats provide the option for 7 day programming, allowing you to be in control of the set temperature in your home or office for every day of the week, so you can change it as your schedule changes. Many of our models are also Energy Star compliant, giving you the assurance that your heating and cooling system is running efficiently.
Our highest rated models are the Infinity thermostats, so if you’re looking to replace your thermostats or outfit a new living/working space with new devices, checking out either of those models might be a great place to start. The friendly, dependable staff at All Weather Contractors will be happy to work with you towards selecting the best model to meet your needs, and will gladly address any concerns that you may have.
